YongNuo have released the new Speedlite YN-500EX, their second HSS enabled flash unit following the recent flagship YN-568EX . Very much resembling Canon’s 430EX II, its clear the YN-500EX is aimed to be the  smaller brother to YN-568EX.

What is Different with YN-568Ex?

  • The 500EX has a smaller guide number than YN-568Ex (53 vs 58).
  • The 500EX is using the legacy Prontor-Compur (PC) type rather than the 568EX’s 2.5mm “sub-mini” jack.
  • The 500Ex is smaller than the YN-568Ex.

The YN-500EX has a lower guide number of 53, compared to 58 of the YN-568EX, and a PC sync port instead of the updated 2.5mm sub-mini sync port found in the YN-568EX. Otherwise they both have quite similar functions, and both being E/ITTL slave units to the Canon and Nikon optic wireless systems. The YN-500EX does also have new illuminated buttons as well.

There is still no HV battey port for external battery packs, or master function. That’s similar to what you would expect from a 430EX II though anyway. Recycle time is stated at 3 seconds at full power, which is in line with the the YN-568 EX and 430EX II as well.

Like the YN-568EX, the 500EX has a a number of slave options for wireless off camera use, the Canon/Nikon optic wireless system, as well as basic optic slave mode which is triggered by the light from other flash units. That includes S1 and S2 TTL pre-flash suppression mode. Using the Canon or Nikon optic wireless, a camera with built in commander can be used as the controller, or separate master units like the Canon ST-E2, Nikon SU-800, or external flash units with master function built in.

Screen layout looks similar to the YN-568EX, though the LCD is considerably smaller. Like the YN-568EX there is no manual flash distance scale available again either. New larger buttons are back lit which may be easier to navigate in the dark.

A metal foot and regular locking ring have become fairly standard now with YN flashes. The YN-568EX foot is a little smaller than the original Canaon/Nikon units, leaving some movement with the flash in the camera hot shoe. Its likely the 500EX will be the same but its not a big issue.

The YN-500EX is clearly designed as a 430EX II, or Nikon SB-700 alternative. The old PC sync port supplied instead of the later 2.5mm sub-mini jack also indicates this was likely an older design.

The YN-500EX is powered by 4 pieces of AA batteries (Both Alkaline or rechargeable compatible).

The YN-500EX is compatible with YongNuo YN-622C wireless TTL trigger.

Buyer will take full responsibility of the product damage/lost of the during the return shipping, thus is advised to use insured courier shipping (PosLaju, Citylink, Fedex, DHL, etc.). Buyer must ship and return the product to ShaShinKi® within 7 days after receiving the return confirmation.

Restocking Fee: Unless the product is defective or the return is a direct result of a ShaShinKi® error, a restocking fee of 15% + Shipping Cost (RM10 or actual shipping cost, whichever is higher) may be charged on hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts and unopened software still in its/their sealed package, and on software that has not been downloaded if the software is delivered electronically.

For a faulty or defective product found within 7 days of receiving, ShaShinKi® will pay for the return shipping cost (compensate as shopping point to customer's account at ShaShinKi®). Customer must inform ShaShinKi® within 7 days of receiving the product. For products older than 7 days, customer will have to ship the product to ShaShinKi® for warranty claim at his / her own cost.

Return / Exchange Policy

  1. Cancellation
    • Request for cancellation if product has not been dispatched after payment completion.
  2. Return
    • Request for return within 7 calendar days following delivery date.
    • Check seller’s approval on buyer’s request.
    • Buyer sends product in question to seller.
    • Seller receives and checks returned product
    • Seller approves return and return is completed.
  3. Exchange
    • Request for exchange within 7 calendar days following receipt of delivery.
    • Check seller’s approval on buyer’s request.
    • Buyer sends product in question to seller.
    • Seller receives and checks returned product
    • Seller send new product to buyer, and buyer receives it, and exchange is completed.
  • How to Request for Cancellation/Return/Exchange
    • You can request for cancellation after completing payment and if product has not been dispatched by then, cancellation request is approved and you can receive refund.
      But, in case seller has already dispatched product, cancellation request can be rejected.
    • You can request for return after obtaining product, you should send the product in question to seller.
      After seller checks if returned product is flawed, and approves your request, return is completed and payment is refunded.
    • You can request for exchange if wrong product is shipped, you should send the product in question to seller.
      After seller checks if returned product is flawed, seller approves your request, and re-sends new product.
  • Criteria for Return/Exchange

    You can request for return/exchange within 7 calendar days following delivery date. But return/exchange request cannot be made in following cases:

    • When request due to change of mind is made after 7 calendar days following delivery date
    • When product is used, destroyed or damaged
    • When tag attached to product is removed or package of product is opened and product value is damaged
    • When sealed package is opened or packaging materials are lost
    • When too much time has passed and product value has so decreased that its re-sale is not possible
    • When return/exchange request is made for customized product such as hand-made shoes or accessories
    • When components of product (including free gift) have been used or lost
    • When buyer did not follow instructions included in product
